A police officer who was injured while confronting protesters in Kisumu on Thursday, March 30, 2023, has succumbed to his injuries.

The officer identified as CPL Ben Oduor attached to Keroka police station in Nyamira county was on duty in Kisumu yesterday around the Jamia supermarket area where the incident occurred.

According to a police report seen by K24 digital, the said officer was seriously injured after they were overwhelmed by the charging rioters who pelted them with stones after they ran out of teargas.

He was rushed to the Aga Khan hospital where he succumbed while undergoing treatment at ICU at around 2151hrs.

"The body is lying at the said hospital morgue awaiting postmortem, " part of the report reads.

On Thursday evening, the protestors also looted Jamia supermarket around the Jua kali area a newly multi-million ultramodern Kwee Funeral home at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

According to the supermarket's proprietor Hussein Hassan, the rioters made away with goods worth millions of shillings as his efforts to call the police bore no fruits.

"I do not know what I did to these people and why they decided to break into my supermarket. I fully depend on this business as I use it to educate my children and feed my family," he said.

Other spare parts shops in Jua kali were also set ablaze even as the firefighters tried to put the fire off.
