Naivasha accident: 3 more people die, several transferred to KNH & other hospitals for treatment

Three more persons have been confirmed dead following a fatal road crash involving Pwani University bus and a matatu in the Kayole area in Naivasha, caused by a brake failure on Thursday, March 30, 2023.

In an update, the trio died while receiving treatment at Naivasha hospital bringing the total fatalities to 17. Of the 17, 10 were students and one staff member of Pwani University and the other 7 were passengers in the matatu.

Speaking to the press, Nakuru HealthbCEC Jackline Osore said 76 patients have so far been treated noting that several patients have been transferred to different hospitals including 7 to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), 2 to Nakuru Provincial General Hospital (PGH) and 1 to Kijabe hospital for specialized treatment.

At the same time, the Chief Officer for Disaster Management in the county, Joyce Cheche, appealed for more blood donations noting that many of the victims lost a lot of blood.

While recounting the accident, one student stated that once the driver learnt about brake failure, he alerted them to tighten their safety belts but it wasn't long before the crash.

"The driver informed us to tighten the safety belts after realizing the brakes had failed. He tried all he could but it did not work," he stated.

The students were heading to Eldoret for a sports event when the accident occurred.

Several leaders including Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu have condoled families who lost their loved ones in the road accident.

"It is with great shock and sorrow that the Ministry of Education conveys its heartfelt condolences to the immediate family members of the seven (7) students and three (3) staff members of Pwani University as well as the passengers in the PSV, who lost their lives in the road accident that occurred at Kayole area along Naivasha- Nairobi Highway today 30th March 2023," CS Machogu said.

Adding;

"I wish the students who were critically injured and transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment and those who are still being managed at Naivasha Level 4 Hospital Theater, a quick recovery."
