The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has warned the public regarding fake calling letters after a recent mass recruitment drive.

The recruitment was aimed at filling 1,500 assistant warders and rangers positions.

In a statement on Thursday, April 25, the KWS noted the prevalence of fraudulent activity surrounding the recent exercise with applicants receiving letters purportedly from the organisation.

"The attention of Kenya Wildlife Service has been drawn to fake calling letters being issued by fraudsters. We strongly advise the public to be vigilant of the fake letters and report the fraudsters to the nearest KWS Station or Police Station," the statement urged.

KWS reiterated that the official recruitment procedure was entirely free of charge.

"As stated in the advert and at all recruitment centres, the recruitment process was free of charge."

1,500 positions

In a notice on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, KWS announced 150 vacancies for the position of cadets (assistant warder I) and 1,350 openings for the position of rangers.

"The Service operates in a remote environment and seeks to recruit 1,500 young and dynamic individuals as cadets (Assistant Warden I) - 150 and Rangers - 1,350 who can endure the condition for training and deployment to various conservation areas in response to the wildlife protection challenges currently being experienced in the country," KWS said.

KWS recruitment exercise

The five-day journey commenced on April 15.

During the initial day, an exercise took place across various regions including Lamu, Marsabit, Isiolo, Embu, Kitui, Machakos, Turkana, West Pokot, Samburu, Nandi, Migori, and Kisii, drawing in hundreds of young participants.

On April 16, the event extended its reach to encompass Tana River, Meru, Makueni, Kirinyaga, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Laikipia, Homabay, and Nyamira, offering opportunities for youth in these areas.

On the third day, a surge of young individuals from Kilifi, Wajir, Tharaka Nithi, Murang’a, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kajiado, Bomet, Bungoma, and Kisumu enthusiastically participated, seeking their fortunes.

On the final day of the selection process, 15 individuals from Kericho County were chosen to become part of the Kenya Wildlife Service following an intensive recruitment event held at Kiprugut Chumo Stadium in Kericho Town.
