Heavy overnight rains have wreaked havoc on the Thika Superhighway, leading to extensive traffic jams.

Motorists have been facing difficulties navigating through the affected areas.

The Juja underpass in particular was closed earlier due to floodwaters reaching dangerous levels, posing a risk to motorists.

The situation has resulted in a traffic snarl-up beginning at Juja Mall, affecting both the main highway and the service lane.

In an advisory, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) urged motorists to utilize the service lane at Exit 14 and 15 until the water levels subside.

Additionally, sections of the Githurai Car Wash service lane and the Kahawa Sukari Engen towards KU main highway, Thika bound, were previously affected but are now passable.

Despite this, motorists are urged to exercise caution in these areas and any others that may experience occasional flooding.

KeNHA in a recent update has said that it has resorted to opening a guard rail with a backhoe to ease the flooding.

However, the authority said that the area is still closed advising motorists to seek alternative routes.

"Update on traffic disruption at Juja Underpass along Thika Superhighway 1/2 The Authority has resolved to open a guard rail with a backhoe as a temporary measure to ease flooding water and restore traffic to normalcy at Juja underpass. While this is a temporary measure, the Authority continues to urge motorists to avoid the area if possible until the water recedes," KeNHA said.
