Nairobi floods: List of areas across the city that peoplè need to vacate

Nairobi County Government on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, released a list of flood hot spots where residents must vacate for safety reasons.

The flood hot spots are in 9 sub-counties out of the total 17 that make up Nairobi County.

Kasarani sub-county

The flood hot spots include:

1. Gachieko in Ruai

2. Gituamba ni Ruai

3. Athi (lower Athi) in Ruai

4. Brookshine in Ruai

5. Budalangi in Clay City

6. Mwengenye in Njiru

7. Infinity in Kasarani

8. Mwisho wa Lami in Mwiki

Mathare sub-county

1. Mathare North area 1, area 2, Mathare north primary.

2. Utallii 4A

Kibra sub-county

Sarangombe ward:

1. Gatwekera, Sokomoko,

2. Gatwekera Kwa Mwangi

3. Gatwekera Shofco

4. Gatwekera Riverside

5. Maranatha Kwa Muganda

6. Soweto West Kwa Foot Bridge

5. Kianda Riverside Holy Unity

Makina ward - Vuma Estate

Raila informal settlement with over 200 people living along Bgong River, Canaan estate in Highrise and Undugu area in Highrise.

Makadara sub-county

1. Ceareal board village

Roysambu sub-county

60,000 people affected

In a statement on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja said that about 60,000 people have been affected by floods in Nairobi.

The governor added that four people lost their lives to the floods while six others are missing.

"An estimated 60,000 people mostly women and children in Nairobi have been severely affected following devastating flash floods which hit the city. Unfortunately, we have lost 4 lives, and the search is on to locate 6 others who have been reported missing.

"The following areas have been adversely affected; Kibra, Lindi, Mathare 4A and Mathare North, Baba Dogo, Githurai and Zimmerman," Sakaja said.

The Nairobi governor further issued 4 key directives to mitigate raging floods that have wreaked havoc in the capital.
