Police in Murang’a are investigating an incident in which a house belonging to a Kanyenyaini ward aspirant was allegedly set on fire by unknown people Tuesday night.

The unknown arsonists are said to have torched the house of George Kinyanjui, who hails from Gitugu and is vying for the Kanyenyaini seat on the Farmers' party ticket.

Kinyanjui said he had left home for Kirinyaga where he resides only to get a call on Tuesday morning that his house was on fire.

“Nothing was saved from the house because no one lives there and it is such a setback for me,” he said.

The aspirant urged the police to hasten the investigations and bring the culprits to book.

Further, he said he is now fearing for his safety since the arson could have been politically instigated.

“I feel threatened because someone could be out to hunt me down and harm me. I urge the security agencies to take the matter with the weight it deserves” he said.

Farmers party leader Irungu Nyakera condemned the incident and called for speedy investigations into it.

He said such acts should be dealt with in accordance with the law adding that with less than 90 days to the general elections, any form of political violence against any aspirant should not be taken lightly.

In a letter seen by K24 Digital, Nyakera said his party has dispatched a team which will work with the police to assess the situation and the damage done.

“I urge the residents of Kanyanyaini to remain calm as the security agents investigate the matter conclusively and unravel the mystery behind the fire,” he said.

“We shall also offer any assistance to our aspirant to help him rebuild his life again” he added.
