Multi-agency team attacked by suspected Pokot bandits

Suspected armed bandits ambushed a multi-agency team dispatched to collect the bodies of security officers who were attacked and killed on the evening of Friday, February 10, 2023.

According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, the team comprising of the General Service Unit (GSU), the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) and Anti-Shock Theft Unit (ASTU) officers had been dispatched to the scene on Saturday, February 11, 2023.

Shortly after they arrived, the suspected bandits fired at them from across the bushes prompting them to flee the scene.

The officers managed to escape the scene after they recovered three bodies of officers who had gone missing. One officer is yet to be traced.

"While at the scene, armed bandits started firing at them indiscriminately from the bushes, from the scene the officers managed to recover 3 bodies of the officers who were missing and had succumbed to the injuries," the police statement reads in parts.

The three officers were found naked with their firearms and uniforms stolen. Vehicles belonging to the officer were also found deflated at the scene.

"One of the vehicles has been set ablaze and others vandalised. Due to dangers at the scene, the vandalism was not quantified. The officers have retreated to ASTU kainuk together with the bodies to restrategize. There is an urgent need of air support," the police report added.

Earlier, three police officers were left dead while seven others were injured after an attack by suspected Pokoto bandits in Turkana.

Confirming the incident, Turkana Coubt commander Samuel Ndanyi noted that the incident which occurred around KWS and Kaakong area, Turkana South happened as the officers were patrolling the region.

"Yesterday we experienced two attacks, we managed to repulse the suspected Pokots bandits but they managed to organise a second attack. They found th security officers who were retrieving the bodies and attacked them," he stated.
