Among those who have paid tributes are East African presidents Yoweri Museveni (Uganda) and John Pombe Magufuli (Tanzania).

Museveni said that Moi was one of the leaders he looked up to when he was in university.

"When he was vice-president I was a student at University of Dar es Salaam and we used to follow what the leaders of East Africa were doing," said Museveni.

Tanzania's President John Magufuli has eulogized Moi for his efforts to revive the regional bloc, the East African Community.

In a tweet in Swahili, Magufuli also said Tanzanians will remember Moi for his efforts to promote diplomatic relations between the two countries.
