Police in Kitui are investigating an incident where a parliamentary candidate in the recently concluded Kitui East parliamentary poll was attacked and injured on Sunday, August 28, 2022.

The Wiper party candidate, Miltonic Mwendwa Kitute, was stabbed with a sharp object and his car vandalised on Sunday night.

According to Kitute, the attack took place at Delta Petrol station as he was going back home after a meeting with the Wiper party agents, engaged in Monday's Kitui Rural mini-election.

"I had stopped at a petrol station to brief the agents about the Kitui Rural poll when three Nissan matatus, three Probox vehicles, a Land Cruiser V8 and Discovery Land Rover pulled over where we were and some men alighted and attacked us," Kitute said.

Speaking from his hospital bed in Kitui General Hospital, the politician alleged that the people who attacked his team were in the company of Kitui East MP-elect Nimrod Mbai, whom he competed with in the August 9 election.

The MP is alleged to have confronted Kitute before drawing his gun and firing at his car, flattening the vehicle's four tyres.

According to Kitute, one Onesmus Kimilu, who vied for the Mbooni parliamentary seat in Makueni on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket, was also present.

He alleges that some of the youths who attacked him were in Kimilu's car.

"I had just gone to greet my good friend from Makueni after noticing his car when some of the attackers who I recognized from Wikililye area stepped from his car," Kitute added.

County Director of Criminal Investigations Aggrey Okoth confirmed the incident, saying police had summoned Mbai for questioning over the shooting drama.
