David Mboni Mwalika has been re-elected as Kitui Rural Member of Parliament.

Mwalika, who ran on a Wiper party ticket, garnered 19,745 votes to beat his closest challenger Charles Mutisya Nyamai of the UDA party, who managed 10,178 votes.

He was declared the winner and handed the election certificate by Kitui Rural constituency returning officer Winfred Ndoti at the constituency tallying centre in South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) on Tuesday morning.

The Kitui Rural MP election was postponed on August 9 following what the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) termed as a ballot mix-up.

IEBC said names and pictures of the candidates were mixed up and ballots papers wrongly routed to West Pokot constituency.

Speaking to members of the press after being issued with his election certificate, Mwalika thanked all of his supporters for trusting in his leadership.

"Thank you so much for voting for me and making me win with many votes I didn't know I would win with these many votes. I will work equally to make my people happy as a leader," he said.

The elections were largely peaceful save for a few cases of violence and alleged voter bribery reported in some stations.

There was low voter turnout than was expected in every polling station.
