The administration of Mt Kenya University has come up with a raft of measures in a bid to avoid repeat of incidents like what happened recently where a second-year student Celestine Muthengei was stabbed to death by her alleged boyfriend.

According to police, the 19-year-old student pursuing Community Development was attacked at around 8 pm on June 14, in her hostel room after she fell out with her lover.

In a statement issued on Thursday, June 17, MKU announced new measures that it says are aimed at ensuring that the institution maintains its status as a responsible and professional institution of International standards.

First, it says it will accord all affected students who were residing outside of the main campus when the incident happened free accommodation in the University hostels for an unlimited period.

This, it says is to help in closely monitoring and ensuring all the counselling needs of the students are being met and observed promptly.

While announcing the new guidelines, the principal in charge of School Affairs, Peter Waweru asserted that all the affected students including those that witnessed the grotesque incident, have all been taken through guidance and counselling processes.

"The institution fully understands how such kind of trauma can affect young minds and thus measures have been put in place to ensure these students are put under the best care for their well being," he said.

Waweru further explained that the institution has also stemmed up efforts to support mental well-being, and devised best ways to handle love affairs issues and rejections for all students.

"Sometime last year, Mount Kenya University (MKU) launched a new program to tackle mental health issues among its students and youth in society," he added.

The institution said that the fully-fledged programme aims to get to the root of mental health challenges blamed for a worrying surge in reported cases of violence, criminality and bizarre incidents involving young people.

The project is under the stewardship of MKU co-founder and board member Dr. Jane Nyutu who recently graduated with a doctorate in Counselling Psychology.
