Kenya Power has confirmed a blackout witnessed across the country on Sunday, December 9, 2023.

In a statement on Sunday night, the utility firm blamed a suspected fault in its system for the outage, adding that efforts are ongoing to restore power.

"We have lost electricity supply to various parts of the country due to a suspected fault affecting the power supply.

"We are working to restore normalcy within the shortest time possible. An update on the restoration progress will be issued in due course," Kenya Power said in a statement.

This is not the first time this year that the country has been plunged into darkness. On August 25, there was a widespread blackout that was also witnessed at key national infrastructure, including the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Consequently, Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen dismissed Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Managing Director Alex Gitari and General Manager Project and Engineering Services, Fred Odawo, following the outage.
