Police in Ganze, Kilifi County have arrested a middle-aged man who confessed to killing his wife over allegations that she was engaging in an extramarital affair.

Festus Baya Maitha, a civil servant attached to the IDs department in Kilifi, told police that he hacked his wife, Claris Amina, in different parts of her body after he discovered that she had a lover outside marriage.

Baya committed the crime at his matrimonial home in Boyani Village, Ganze Constituency in Kilifi County on Monday, March 16.

Kilifi County Police Commander, James Mugera, said Baya surrendered himself to police at Kilifi post after killing his spouse.

“He (Baya) said he killed her (Amina) because she was engaging in extramarital affairs,” Mugera told K24 Digital Monday evening.

“When marital dispute arises, you shouldn’t take the law into your own hands. You can seek advice from close relatives, elders in the society or professional counsellors. Just look at this case: a civil servant took the law into his own hands and decided to kill his wife. Had he sought professional help, he would have saved the woman’s life and shielded himself from possible jail term. If anything, potential partners are many, and he, most likely, would have gotten a new spouse after ending his marriage to the now-deceased,” added the police boss.

Amina’s body was taken to Kilifi County Referral Hospital morgue.

Though unclear, it is alleged Baya and Amina had three children together.
