A house help has been charged with stealing Sh170,000 from her employer by transferring the mobile money to her M-Pesa account.

Cecilia Chumba Buhasio, who was arrested at her home village in Kakamega County, is alleged to have committed the offense at Hill Crescent Estate in Westlands, Nairobi.

According to the police report, Buhasio allegedly also stole from her employer, Joyce Waruguru Muganda, two Blackberry phones and IPhone valued at Sh150,000 on October 22, 2020.

After denying the theft charges at the Milimani Law Courts where she was arraigned on Monday, February 1, Nairobi Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku released her on Sh80,000 cash bail or Sh100,000 bond.

Muganda reported the theft to Railways Police Station after receiving an alert from Equity Bank SMS service that money had been withdrawn and transferred to the Safaricom line belonging to her house help.

The cash was transferred in three transactions of Sh140,000, Sh20,000 and Sh10,000.

After receiving the bank transaction alerts, Muganda told the police that she rushed home to find out what was happening since the house help was ignoring her calls.

On reaching home, she discovered that the Blackberry which had an Equitel line was missing and her daughter's phone was nowhere to be seen.

The suspect was tracked to Shamakhikho area in Kakamega County where the investigating officer recovered the stolen phones.
