The body of a 20-year-old man who drowned on Saturday 6, November 2021 in River Sagana, Ndia constituency within Kirinyaga County has been discovered and retrieved from the river.

The body was retrieved at around 6:30 pm on Sunday by a local diver since the county government does not have official divers.

According to Eston Muriuki, his son Kelvin Muthii had joined his colleagues for a swimming expedition an experience that turned tragic the moment Kelvin dived into the rough waters.

"He was in the company of his colleagues, and they had come here to swim. Unfortunately, my son was the first to dive in the water and that was the end," Eston said.

He says that his secondborn had no prior knowledge of swimming.

"He didn't know how to swim, and I wonder why he dared attempt such a dangerous move," Eston added

Eston, however, had said that he has come to terms with the death of his son and would accept any fate.

The father said that the remains of his son are lying at a private mortuary in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County, awaiting burial.

The body was retrieved by a local diver identified as Joe Kariuki.

"This section of the river is very deep and non-locals should not be allowed to access it,” he said.

Residents in the area have expressed concern over the lack of official county divers.

They say that such incidents would not be taking too long if the county had employed experienced divers.

"It has taken two days to find and retrieve the body. This might have taken a shorter time if the county government is always prepared," Kariuki added.
