Seven people were killed during the August 9 general election, a report by Haki Africa has shown.

Haki Africa Director Hussein Khalid said the incidences were spread across the country.

Among those killed were Brian Olunga, William Ochieng, and Daniel Musyoka.

Olunga was allegedly shot dead by Kiimilili Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa.

The MP has since been arraigned and he is still in police custody.

According to Khalid, Ochieng was stabbed to death in Kibera.

Another case was that of Musyoka, the IEBC Returning Officer for Embakasi East, whose body was found in Kajiado.

The initial autopsy report shows he was strangled to death.

Haki Africa report

At the same time, Haki Africa said property was destroyed during election day citing an incident in Kesses, Uasin Gishu County where three houses were torched.

The human rights body also said several vehicles were damaged by rowdy youths in Mombasa

However, despite the isolated incidences, Haki Africa said the election was largely peaceful.

"The members of the public remained calm even when they were provoked. However, IEBC fell below the standard. For the first time in Kenyan history, there was a postponement of elections in some parts of the country.

"Our general observation, however, is that the election was reasonably free and fair," Khalid said.
