Efforts are underway to rescue three people trapped in a four-storey building that collapsed in Kisumu County last night.

According to the Kisumu County Commissioner, Josephine Ouko, the building that is still under construction came tumbling down last night.

It is located within Coptic area in West Kajulu Location, about nine kilometres west of the station.

The county administrator said that they were informed at midnight of the building collapse and immediately engaged the disaster management team.

Within half an hour, the disaster management team was on the ground.

"We had six people. Three people were rescued with serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital," Ouko said.

In the morning, the county commissioner said that they could hear one of the remaining people underneath the rubble but they were still trying to establish the whereabouts of the two others.

She said they got a good response from both the national and county rescue team and they are hoping that in the next one hour they should be able to rescue one of the three people.

Ouko said that the victims were workers who were sleeping on the completed section of the building.

"It is unfortunate that the building came down when they were still there. We are going to engage our experts to find out why the building came down so that we are able to instigate legal action," she said.
