A family in Ikolomani sub county, Kakamega county is mourning the death of their three children who died after a fire incident.

Confirming the unfortunate incident, Ikolomani Deputy County Commissioner Geoffrey Mayama stated that the fire broke out when the children and their mother, Jane Mutambi, 35, were sleeping.

The police boss also confirmed that one of the children was a Grade 2 pupil while the others were aged 10 and 12. The three were rushed to the Kakamega County Referral Hospital but died upon arrival.

“This family was living in a rental house at Lihrembe and it is suspected that the candle they had lit fell while they were asleep causing the fire,” Mayama stated.

The mother of the children is currently receiving treatment at the facility while the bodies of the minors were moved to the Kakamega County funeral parlour.

Separate incident

The recent incident comes weeks after two children were killed in a fire that razed their house in Uthiru.

Police who arrived at the scene noted that the fire had razed down everything and little was salvaged from the incident.

Witnesses told police that the two minors had been locked inside the house at the time of the unfortunate incident, police however, asserted that they would be investigating the incident to determine what caused the fire.

“We are yet to confirm the cause of the fire but detectives will be investigating the case to find out what happened," Kabete subcounty commander Joseph Muriuki stated.
