Being the last voter-registration day, youths in Gatundu North, Kiambu County are now demanding handouts to be enlisted with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Gatundu North returning officer Muthee Gakuru said that since the massive voter registration exercise began, only 2,542 out of their targeted 15,000 voters have been enlisted.

He said that while they have been sensitizing the eligible voters to register, most of the youths are reluctant to become voters while others have been demanding to be paid for them to consent to their registration.

"Most of the youths we are talking to say they won't vote because of reasons such as joblessness. Others are now demanding to be paid for them to register, a habit that was instigated by politicians," Gakuru stated.

"There is also an issue of identity cards whose production has been taking so long denying some the opportunity to be registered now," he added.

Gakuru urged the unregistered persons to visit the Constituency offices for normal registration as the electoral body is set to end the registration period today.

Across the country, a low number of voters have been registered in what IEBC attribute to voter apathy and poor political goodwill.
