Wetang’ula approves impeachment motion against Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has approved a motion by Bumula MP Jack Wamboka seeking to impeach Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi.

The MP is seeking to have the cabinet secretary removed from office following a fake fertiliser scandal which rocked the country recently

The Parliament will discuss the motion on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

The clerk is hereby directed to publish the special motion for the dismissal of the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Department in the Order Paper for Thursday, 2nd May 2024 for consideration by the House during the morning sitting of that day which has been agreed upon by the House Business Committee," Wetang'ula ordered.

"I find that the foregoing special motion meets the applicable procedural requirements for it to proceed to the next stage."

This comes days before the National Assembly proceeds for recess on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Wamboka wants Linturi kicked out of office for gross misconduct, serious breaches of public trust, mismanagement of resources as well as gross violation of various provisions of the constitution by approving the procurement and distribution of fake fertilizer by the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).

The MP also wants Linturi sacked for signing an agency agreement with 51 Capital and Africa Diatomite Industries on March 31, 2023, for the supply and distribution of GPC diatomaceous whose product was not sold as chemical fertilizer but a soil conditioner.

“He has failed to demonstrate professionalism in carrying out duties of the office in a manner that maintains public confidence in the integrity of the office, amounts to gross misconduct contrary to section 11(a) of the Leadership and Integrity Act,’” Wamboka said.

The motion has been signed by over 110 MPs including Joyce Kamene (Machakos, Wiper), Raphael Wanjala (Budalangi, ODM), Pauline Lenguris (Samburu MP, UDA), Maryanne Kitany (Aldai, UDA), Adams Korir (Keiyo North, UDA), Otiende Amollo (Rarieda, ODM), Samuel Parashina (Kajiado South, ODM), Adagala Beatrice (Vihiga MP, ANC), Stephen Mogaka (West Mugirango, JP) and Clive Gisairo (Kitutu Masaba, ODM).

Others are Mohamed Adow (Wajir South, ODM), David Pkosing (Pokot South, KUP), Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri, UDA), James Wamacukuru (Kabete, UDA) and Geoffrey Ruku (Mbeere North, DP), Mohamed Adow (Wajir South, ODM), David Pkosing (Pokot South, KUP), Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri, UDA), James Wamacukuru (Kabete, UDA) and Geoffrey Ruku (Mbeere North, DP).

Linturi's fate will either be decided by an 11-member committee or plenary as will be decided by the house.
