74-year-old Stephen Wang'ondu accused of planning own son's murder passed away on Friday, May 7 at Outspan Hospital in Nyeri, the family announced.

According to a family member, Wang'ondu was admitted at the medical facility a few days after Senior Principal Magistrate Mathias Okuche released him on Ksh 1 million bond.

The family, however, did not divulge the exact cause of death.

The late billionaire was co accused with four others for the alleged murder of Daniel Mwangi who detectives say was executed on New Year's eve.

Mwangi's body was found lying in a pool of blood at his home in Mweiga town. Detectives investigating the murder claimed that Mwangi’s death may have been motivated by desire for insurance compensation.

His father is said to have started processing compensation claims from an insurance company a few days after the burial of his son.

Detectives were also investigating whether Wang’ondu’s decision to invite his son’s estranged wife to his house may have led to Mwangi’s killing.

Wang'ondu was arrested on February 24 after sleuths from the DCI identified him as the key suspect in his son's murder.

According to the DCI officers, the accused hired and paid out Ksh160,000 to four hitmen for the execution assignment.
