Uhuru, Raila, Mudavadi lead Kenyans in mourning former Nairobi Speaker Ole Magelo

President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent a message of condolence to the family, friends and relatives of former Nairobi County Speaker Alex Ole Magelo who passed away on the night of Friday, May 7 at a Nairobi hospital.

In his message of comfort and encouragement, Uhuru described the late Ole Magelo as an outstanding leader who worked hard to make Kenya a better country for all.

The Head of State said the late Magelo’s commitment to duty and service to fellow Kenyans saw him being appointed as a member of the Kenya Leather Development Council last year.

“I have known the late Ole Magelo for a long time and from my interactions with him, I came to appreciate his commitment and desire to make life better for others.

“He was a gentleman and a sports enthusiast who mentored very many young people through football to become great men and women in our country. Many remember Ole Magelo for the good work he did as Chairman of Kenyan football giants AFC Leopards,” President Kenyatta eulogised.

The President prayed to God to give the family of the departed leader strength and fortitude as they mourn their beloved kin.

Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga has also conveyed his condolence message. He says, in Magelo's death, the Maa community have lost a strong and fearless leader who stood up for them without apologies.

He further eulogised the late Speaker as a great football enthusiast and official.

"Kenya has lost a patriot. I have lost a steadfast and reliable friend. May God comfort Magelo’s family and the Maa nation," Raila said.

On his part, ANC boss Musalia Mudavadi said he was saddened by the demise of the former Nairobi County Assembly Speaker.

"Magelo who once served as AFC Leopards chairman, will be remembered for his immense contribution to the country's sporting fraternity and his service in the public limelight," Mudavadi said.

Governor Joseph Ole Lenku tweeted, " It is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of one of our greatest sons and warriors of our community: Alex Ole Magelo after a short illness. The late Magelo died at Nairobi Hospital where he has been admitted for some weeks now."

Nairobi County Woman Representative Esther Passaris also condoled with Magelo's widow, in a tweet. "Godfather, gone too soon. I prayed you would win this battle. I am sorry it took you up.

"Nothing could bring you down. Not even Covid. I am jealous you are finally with your heavenly family & friends, not us; your brothers Saitoti, Biwott, Ntimama went ahead to welcome you home."

Senator Ledama Ole Kina also joined other leaders in mourning Magelo saying, "Today is a sad day for us! I am sadden by the departure of a true friend and a son of the Maa Nation Speaker Alex Ole Magelo. Rest well with the Angels say hi to Saitoti, Ntimama and Joh Keen for us!"

Tusker, Wazito and Sofapaka football clubs have also sent their messages of condolence to Magelo's family.
