NRG radio presenter Mwalimu Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Muthoni, has been charged with robbery with violence, contrary to Section 296 (2) of the Penal Code.

Mwalimu Rachel was arraigned at the Kikuyu Law Courts on Friday, January 31, on allegations of using violence to rob her victim, a middle-aged man, of his Ksh103, 500 in property and money.

“It is alleged that on the 17th of January this year, while at Area 87 in Kinoo, Kikuyu Sub-County, you [Mwalimu Rachel] and four others not before court, robbed one Martin Mbugua Njeri of his two silver chains valued at Ksh65, 000, a wrist watch valued at Ksh35, 000, and Ksh3, 500 in cash. You applied violence while robbing Martin of his property,” the prosecutor read the charge to Mwalimu Rachel.

The mother-of-one pleaded not guilty to the criminal offence, and was released on Ksh10, 000 cash bail.

The matter will be mentioned at the same court on February 3, 2020.

Mwalimu Rachel was arrested and detained at Kinoo Police Station after his alleged victim, Mbugua, filed a report at the police post, accusing Rachel and four men of assaulting and robbing him of his valuables and money.

It is alleged that Rachel, her boyfriend and two other “well-built” men on January 17 beat up Mbugua and even pulled out two of his dread-locks from his scalp.

Mbugua, who is a friend of Sailors music group member, Miracle Baby, was allegedly accused by Rachel that he [Mbugua] convinced Miracle Baby to keep away from the radio host, who is Sailors music group manager.

Ksh10 million lost?

Mwalimu Rachel, as a result, allegedly told Mbugua she had lost Ksh10 million in deals because of Miracle Baby’s constant absence when the music group was needed to perform at events.

The attack is alleged to have happened outside Miracle Baby’s house in Kinoo.

The suspects are accused of dragging Mbugua on the ground while mocking him as he writhed in pain. The five are also accused of tying Mbugua’s hands using an electrical cable and bundling him into a saloon car’s boot.

Mbugua, in his police report, said the five tortured him, including squeezing his manhood, before leaving him badly wounded.

Death

Should Mwalimu Rachel be found guilty of the robbery with violence charge, she stares at a possible death sentence.

Section 296 (2) of the Penal Code states: “If the offender is armed with any dangerous or offensive weapon or instrument, or is in company with one or more other person or persons, or if, at or immediately before or immediately after the time of the robbery, he wounds, beats, strikes or uses any other personal violence to any person, he shall be sentenced to death.”
