Former Kiambu County Deputy Governor James Nyoro has been sworn in as the third person to lead the county as its chief administrator.

Nyoro takes over from former governor, Ferdinand Waititu, who was impeached by the Senate on Wednesday night over claims of abuse of office and misappropriation of public funds.

His impeachment followed proceedings, for two days, on charges brought against him by Kiambu County Assembly Members who accused him of abuse of office and other crimes.

Debate ahead of the vote was so charged and openly displayed political differences affiliated to the Tanga Tanga and Kieleweke factions.

Majority of the senators voted for the motion seeking to validate his impeachment by Kiambu County Assembly, despite concerns on whether it met the legal threshold from a section of legislators.

Waititu was facing three charges, among them, gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office and crime under the national law.

Waititu was already facing corruption charges, with a magistrate having ordered that he stays away from office until his case was heard and determined.

Waititu had moved to court Friday seeking to stop Nyoro’s swearing-in, but High Court judge Weldon Korir declined to stop the process.

The swearing-in of Kiambu deputy governor, James Nyoro, as governor was scheduled for Friday, January 31.

Korir, in his verdict, said he could not stop a Judicial process that was being undertaken by a competent judge of the High Court.

The judge directed Waititu to file for inter partes hearing on Monday, February 3.

Justice John Onyiego presided over James Nyoro’s swearing-in at the Kiambu County Headquarters.

Also present at the event, was Chief Magistrate Patricia Gichohi.
