Lawyer Miguna Miguna has made it clear that his support for President William Ruto during the 2022 General Election was not for selfish reasons.

The firebrand lawyer took to his official X account to denounce claims that he supported Ruto's presidential bid in exchange for his return to Kenya.

He stated that the claims are a sick joke which must be rejected and noted that his ban from the country did not take away his rights of citizenship.

While insisting that his return was not a gift, Miguna reiterated that he only exercised his rights without fear.

"I’m married to one woman. The delusional idea or thought that I supported @WilliamsRuto in exchange for returning to my motherland is a SICK JOKE that must be rejected. I never lost my rights to citizenship. My return wasn’t a GIFT. I’m exercising my rights without fear!" he said.

Miguna returned to Kenya on October 20, 2022, after four years in exile.

This was weeks after Ruto was sworn in as president. At the time, the lawyer commended Kenyans who supported him and acknowledged Ruto's administration for facilitating his return.

"Without this administration, I would not be back home," he said at the time.

The lawyer had been deported to Canada where he is also a citizen following his role in the unofficial swearing-in of opposition leader Raila Odinga as "the people's president" back in 2018.

At the time, former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i argued that the lawyer had lost his citizenship due to the requirements of the old constitution, which prohibited dual citizenship, claims which Miguna rubbished.

"You must fill out a piece of paper to regain your Kenyan passport or citizenship. There's a judgment by the court on this matter which prescribed clearly how you regain your citizenship," said Matiang'i in a media interview on April 18, 2022.

He added: "There are court rulings in place by the high court on how you regain citizenship after you lost citizenship in the old constitution. Because in the old constitution you were not allowed to have dual citizenship.”
