Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has declared a one-month curfew in Marsabit County following increased hostilities in the region.

Matiang'i said the county, last week, lost six lives as criminal activities continue to rise in the county.

The CS further accused political leaders in the county of fueling the tension in the Northern Kenya region.

"With effect from 6 pm tonight, we have placed the whole of Marsabit county under curfew for 30 days. The curfew will be between 6 pm and 6 am," Matiang'i said.

The CS said the government has also launched a collection of illegal firearms that are in civilians' possession.

"We carry out this operation until sanity prevails in Marsabit and until we stop the senseless loss of lives," he said in a press conference attended by Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and Interior PS Karanja Kibicho on Monday.

Also affected is Komu sub-location in Isiolo county.

Matiang'i added that the operation will extend to Sololo area near the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
