Members of Parliament (MPs) have approved the motion to impeach Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mithika Linturi.

Out of the 188 MPs who voted, 149 supported the motion to have Linturi impeached over the recent fertilizer scandal which grabbed headlines, 36 opposed the motion whereas three abstained from the proceedings.

It is required that an impeachment motion should be supported by at least one-third of the members of the National Assembly for it to proceed.

The motion cites Linturi's approval of the procurement and distribution of fake fertilizer by the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), and the signing of an agency agreement for the supply and distribution of GPC diatomaceous, which was misrepresented as chemical fertilizer.

Consequently, the National Assembly will form a Parliamentary Committee to investigate the accusations against the CS, in line with the speaker's directive.

The committee will comprise 6 MPs from the Kenya Kwanza coalition, 4 from the Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya coalition and one MP from the Jubilee party.

The select committee is then expected to present its findings which will determine Linturi's fate to the National Assembly within ten days.

”In nominating the members, parties are to ensure the nominees to the committee reflect the diversity of the house including regional and gender considerations," a statement by National Assembly speaker Moses Wetangula reads in parts.
