The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the reopening of the Kamulu-Kangundo (B63) Road to traffic after a day of temporary closure due to flooding.

In a statement on Thursday, May 2, 2024, KeNHA assured the public that the route was safe.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority is pleased to inform the public that Kamulu-Kangundo (B63) Road is now open. This follows the subsiding of floodwater at Joska, a section of the highway that was fully submerged after heavy downpours," KeNHA stated.

Despite the reopening, KeNHA urged motorists to exercise caution while navigating the route, particularly at the Joska section, as there might still be residual flooding due to stormwater upstream of the Athi River.

"The Authority, however, appeals to motorists to approach this section with caution as there could be possible flooding due to stormwater upstream of Athi River," KeNHA added.

KeNHA reassured the public that minor repairs were underway to address any damage caused by the flooding.

"The Authority is on the ground for minor repairs caused by the water after confirming the structural integrity of the Bridge. We remain committed to ensuring seamless connectivity to facilitate the safe passage of goods and services for economic prosperity. At , your safety is our utmost priority."

In an announcement released on Wednesday evening, the Authority reported that heavy rainfall upstream had caused flooding in a specific section of the road, making the bridge unsafe for travel.

KeNHA urged road users to avoid the affected area.

"The Authority cautions road users against any attempts to use this affected section of the road in the interest of their safety."

"The public is asked to be patient and wait for the waters to subside for the Authority to inspect the bridge and facilitate safe passage," KeNHA said.

Adding;

"The Authority will endeavour to install signs where safe parking on the highways is available."

They recommended alternative routes for motorists to reach their destinations safely.

For those heading towards Joska-Kamulu, they were advised to use the route through Joska-Koma-Kaloleni-Mua Interchange-Cabanas-Ruai-Kamulu.

Conversely, Kamulu-Joska bound traffic was to take the Kamulu-Ruai-Cabanas-Mua Interchange-Kaloleni-Koma-Joska route.

"The public is urged to call the toll-free line 0800-211-244 which is operational on a 24-hour basis to report any incident on the road which has the potential of compromising public safety."
