A matatu driver who rammed into four vehicles while attempting to kill a traffic police officer for impounding his vehicle due to a traffic offence has been arrested.

The suspect, identified as Tito Mohammed Wachira, appeared before Mombasa resident magistrate Rita Oraro under miscellaneous application after members of the public arrested him at Makupa causeway.

In his affidavit tabled before the court, Makupa (OCS) Julius Oketch informed the court that the suspect, the driver of a motor vehicle, intentionally rammed into four other motor vehicles in an attempt to kill the traffic police officer, identified as Maxwell Kirimi.

Kirimi had stopped the driver and requested to escort his car to Makupa police station, citing the lack of an inspection sticker.

“The suspect had indicated that he was going to finish off the officer by killing him through an accident, the commission of the offence points to attempted murder,” the affidavit reads in parts.

Officer was found lying inside the Matatu

The court also heard that the officer who had been seriously injured was found lying unconscious inside the alleged vehicle.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is currently admitted with head and leg injuries.

“We are yet to ascertain the extent of injuries of the said officer and obtain his medical records, which are necessary if we prefer charges of attempted murder,” Oketch stated.

The magistrate allowed the application to have the suspect detained for five days at Makupa police station to allow police complete investigations.
