A newborn in Kibera, Nairobi county was left dead after she inhaled tons of gases emitted from teargas canisters lobbed into their home by anti-riot officers on Thursday, March 30, 2023.
The baby's mother, Joyce Kemunto sadly recounted that her child was in good condition before the police hurled teargas canisters. She says one of the canisters lobbed into their house from the roof and her baby started crying immediately.
Consequently, she attempted first aid efforts to help her child who was wailing uncontrollably from the effects.
“Vile ilirushwa huko kwa mabati ikaanguka ndani ya nyumba mtoto wakaanza kulia. Nikampanguza na maji, nikaona ako poa lakini alikuwa bado analialia, Mtoto ikafika usiku akaanza kutoa mapofu kwa mapua, ndio ameaga hivyo (When the teargas was lobbed it fell on the roof before getiting into my house and the baby started crying. I tried to conduct first aid by wiping the baby with water, she was okay but was still crying. Later in the night, my baby had foam in her nose, she died shortly after) ” Kemunto told a local publication.
The baby's body is currently lying at City mortuary pending an autopsy.
Separate incident
The latest came barely days after two men were shot dead by officers after Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition protests turned violent on Monday, March 27, 2023.
The two were shot dead separately in different spots of Nyalenda na Kondele in Kisumu county
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital CEO George Rae, noted that one of the bodies of the protestors was taken to the facility's mortuary.
Rae noted that the body of the unknown man was brought to the morgue on Monday afternoon.
"I want to confirm that so far one person who was shot dead was brought to our facility's mortuary by the police before they left. The unidentified man is in his early twenties," he said.
