Chris Atema, who was serving in the US Army as a soldier, drowned in a swimming pool in Arizona State on Friday afternoon (July 26) while rescuing a young girl of Canadian descent from suffocating in water.

The girl, who was taken to hospital after divers removed her from the water body, is in a stable condition, doctors said.

It was too late by the time they were attempting to save Atema's life.

Atema, who is survived by a wife and two children, died aged 35, his father, Bernard Shinali, told K24 Digital.

Atema's wife, who is nine months pregnant, is expecting their third child anytime from today (Saturday, July 27).

The deceased's father says plans are underway to have his son's body flown to Kenya for burial.
