A man in Eldoret, on Thursday, stunned the court after he confessed that he smokes bhang to support Roots party presidential candidate George Luchiri Wajackoyah.

While appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Menya, the man identified as Boniface Mutua openly told the court that he smokes bhang so that he can get the energy to campaign for Wajackoyah.

"For now, I smoke bhang to gain courage and voluntarily campaign for Wajackoyah, who has promised to legalise bhang. I might be among the first farmers to grow bhang if my president legalises it, "Mutua told the court.

According to court documents, Mutua was arrested on July 11, 2022, at Bahati estate in Ainabkoi, Uasin Gishu with three rolls of bhang valued at Ksh90.

Magistrate Menya asked Mutua to stop using bhang citing that it was still illegal.

"For now bhang is illegal and therefore you are sentenced for the offence," Menya ruled.

The case will be heard on July 27, 2022.

Wajackoyah pledges to legalise bhang

Wajackoyah became an instant sensation after he proposed that his administration will legalise bhang if elected president.

The light-hearted presidential candidate who has been vocal about legalising marijuana noted that he will save the country from the ballooning debts using proceeds from bhang.

While others criticized his promise on marijuana, his supporters have lauded him for the move stating that they would back his presidential bid.
