Former Yatta Member of Parliament Gedion Mutiso has passed away.

Mutiso, 91, died in a hospital in Nairobi while receiving treatment on Wednesday, April 26, 2023.

In a statement, the current Yatta MP Robert Basil termed Mutiso as a visionary leader who set the pace for other leaders from the region.

"It is sad to learn about the sudden demise of the first and longest-serving Member of Parliament - Yatta Constituency, Hon. Gedion Munyao Mutiso majorly known as Mutiso wa Yatta. Mutiso was a true visioned leader, who set the pace for others like me to run Yatta Constituency on a goal, A goal to transform Yatta Sub-county," Basil stated.

"The First Yatta Constituency MP Gedion Mutiso served Yatta Constituency after the colonial period. He truly served Yatta Constituency rightfully and fruitfully. May his family and Yatta people be condoled. May the Almighty God give you strength and comfort you during this hard time. Peace be with you. May our Good gracious God Rest His soul in eternal peace."

Mutiso was the first elected Member of Parliament of Yatta constituency in Machakos.

He was a labour activist in the 1960s, fighting for equal employment rights for Africans and deputized Tom Mboya as the Secretary General of the Kenya Federation of Laborers.

He also served in the Military as a Corporal but left unceremoniously citing mistreatment by the colonial masters.

While an MP, he also served as an Assistant Minister in the ministries of Home Affairs, Education, Health, Agriculture, Lands and Housing.
