Two more bodies have been retrieved in Kona Punda following a boat accident which happened on Sunday.

The Kenya Red Cross has intensified its rescue efforts, establishing tracing desks at strategic locations to gather information and assist families of the missing persons.

"Two bodies retrieved, six reported missing at our tracing desk. Early this morning, we continued with search and rescue/retrieval operations and set up three tracing desks near Total Petrol Station in Madogo, another near Garissa Bridge and Garissa Mortuary," Kenya Red Cross announced.

The accident occurred during a boat trip from Kona Punda to Mororo along the Garissa-Madogo road, which was necessitated by flooding caused by heavy rains.

Challenging conditions have made some areas inaccessible, forcing residents to rely on boats to reach Garissa Town.

In a separate incident, flash floods in Kamuchiri Village have prompted the evacuation of several individuals to a health facility in Mai Mahiu.

Authorities, including the Kenya Police, County Disaster team, Kenya Red Cross, and community members, are actively responding to the situation.

To bolster search and rescue operations amid the ongoing flooding, the Red Cross has deployed new rescue boats, particularly in high-risk flood areas like Tana River and Kilifi Counties.

Impact on infrastructure

The flooding has also severely impacted public infrastructure, leading to road closures and disruptions across the country.

Major affected routes include sections of the Modogashe-Habaswein Road, Modika-Dadaab Road, North Horr-Kalacha Road, Namanga-Amboseli Road, Isinya-Konza Road, Kamukuru-Elnagata Road, Elnagata-Kajiado Road, and Oltepesi-Magadi Road.
