Transport was on Monday paralysed along Embu-Kanyoonyo road in Machanga after irate locals blocked the road to protest water shortage in the area.

The locals claim that River Thiba which they depend on for water has been blocked. They claim some people have diverted water at the river to irrigate their private farms.

For the better part of today, the road has been impassable after the locals' barricade.

"We will not relent until those who have blocked this river unblock it. They cannot subject us to this suffering. Our animals are suffering too," Stephen Nyaga one of the demonstrators stated.

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire was also caught up in the demonstration while on her way to Mutuombare for a development meeting forcing her to stop and address the locals on the issue.

Mbarire said that she had made some calls to the ministry of water for the river to be unblocked and allow flow downstream.

"We cannot have some few people blocking our river to an extent of missing water for almost a month that is completely unacceptable," the county boss noted.
