Concern has been raised over the discipline of learners in Kirinyaga County after 23 students were nabbed drinking alcoholic beverages at a bar in Mwea-East Sub-county.

According to police in Kirinyaga, the 23 were arrested inside Club Season Ngurubani bar which is allegedly owned by a teacher on Sunday night ahead of today's schools reopening.

Confirming the incident, Mwea-East Sub-county Police Commander Daniel Kitavi, said security officers from Wang’uru police station stormed the bar after receiving a tip off from members of the public about the teenagers drinking at around 9pm.

Kitavi said arresting the learners was an uphill task since some of them who managed to escape hurled stones and objects at police during the operation.

"We arrested 11 girls and 12 boys," Kitavi said, adding that the owner of the bar will be charged for violating COVID-19 protocols on operation of bars as well as selling alcohol to minors.

The 23 learners from Ngurubani town and the surrounding area will be arraigned in court today morning.
