Former Nairobi mayor, Charles Rubia, is dead.

Rubia’s son, Mike Rubia, told K24 Digital that the multi-party democracy fighter died in his sleep at his Karen home on Sunday night.

“He drove himself home, and proceeded to his bedroom for the night,” said Mike.

The 96-year-old’s son says his father -- a few days to his demise -- had breathing complications.

Rubia, the first Nairobi mayor of African descent -- who served between 1963 and 1969 --, leaves behind four sons. Two of his children are already deceased.

His wife died 20 years ago.

In the lead-up to multi-party democracy, Rubia was detained alongside the late multi-party system rooter, Kenneth Matiba.

More soon.
