Agnes Tirop’s husband arrested as prime suspect in her gruesome murder

Police have arrested the key suspect in the gruesome murder of 25-year-old world 5,000m record holder Agnes Tirop.

In a statement posted on social media platforms of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the investigative body revealed that its sleuths nabbed Ibrahim Rotich in Changamwe, Mombasa county as he tried to cross to a neighbouring country.

"Ibrahim Rotich, who was in a relationship with the athlete was arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa county, as he tried to flee to a neighboring country to evade justice," the statement read in part.

The suspect is believed to have murdered he two-time World Athletics championships bronze medallist,by stabbing her before going into hiding.

Tirop’s body was discovered on Wednesday October 13 in Iten, with visible stab wounds on her abdomen.

Police report that Rotich was involved in a road accident in Mlolongo as he attempted to desperately escape from arrest.

"Rotich had rammed his getaway vehicle into a lorry at Mlolongo, along Mombasa road, as he desperately escaped our dragnet," the DCI revealed.

The suspect is currently being held at the Changamwe police staion as detectives process him for arraignment in court.
