Three pupils died and scores sustained serious injuries after being involved in a grisly road accident along Gitugi Murang'a road Saturday evening.

The pupils from Maadili Primary School in Kiambu were going back home after attending a scout function in Nyeri County.

The driver of the bus is said to have failed to negotiate a sharp corner and veered off the road with the bus rolling several times.

One child died on the spot and two others succumbed to the injuries while being rushed to Murang'a district hospital.

According to the preliminary report from the police, the bus had 35 pupils on board, three teachers and two drivers totalling up to 38 passengers.

Those injured were rushed to Murang'a and Maragua hospitals for treatment with two being admitted at the ICU at the Murang'a hospital.

A majority have however been moved to other hospitals by their parents who visited them after getting the report of the accident.

According to one of the witnesses who lives near the road, she heard a loud bang followed by screams from the children and rushed to the scene.

"Few other people who were around also came and we managed to rescue a good number of children before the rescue team arrived" said a witness.

According to Hezron Kamau, an administration officer, the area is turning out to be a black spot as three accidents have occurred here in one month.

Kamau however said the drivers who are new to the route fall victims because this section of the road is steep and has sharp bends.

He added that the road is not marked and has no signage which he termed as dangerous for the road users.

"Speed bumps should also be erected to help motorists slow down and avert such incidents," he remarked.

"Three accidents have occurred on the same spot in the past few weeks and the trend is now becoming a concern," he added.

Murang'a governor

Murang'a governor Irungu Kang'ata visited the victims at the hospital pledging to offer support to the affected families.

The bodies of the three pupils are at the Murang'a Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
