Popular Kikuyu artiste Muigai wa Njoroge's first wife Gladys Njeri has opened up about surviving her polygamous marriage.

Njeri was speaking during an interview with Kameme FM where she revealed that polygamy was one of her greatest childhood fears since she grew up in a home where her dad had two households.

Recalling how she met her husband, Njeri revealed she met Muigai who had visited where she lived with a friend. After three days, the two got married and she conceived immediately and later gave birth to their firstborn daughter who is now 21 years.

She recalls her husband's breakout in music and their eventual move to their plot of land in Mwihoko, Githurai 45. At the time, the singer had started gaining fame.

Njeri Muigai enjoyed marital bliss until her husband married a second wife. She said Muigai had opened up to her about his desire for a polygamous marriage after barely two months into their marriage but she thought he was playing gimmicks with her.

True to his word, Muigai married his second wife Queen Stacy nine years into their marriage. He later moved in with her leaving Njeri alone with their children.

Njeri says she fell into alcoholism and for about two years, she would drink every day and sometimes overnight to deal with the pain.

"I used to drink from morning to evening and at the time I was broke. I was bitter and I hated men. I even contemplated suicide," she stated.

Five years later, she was able to cope and accept the situation however she notes she does not appreciate how she handled the situation.

"Good morning my friends. Today being Valentine's Day, I would like to celebrate my girls. These two decided to make me happy, to be patient with me, to support me and to fight for me. They chose us instead of being selfish, and bitter. Such people with such kind of hearts are few nowadays. May God help me to bring them honour and may they be blessed," he wrote.
