Twenty-eight Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) candidates from Kenyoro Mixed Boarding Secondary School in Marani, Kisii County have been suspended over unruly behaviour.

The candidates will now have to operate from their homes for the remainder of their KCSE exams.

Kisii County acting county commissioner, Leornard Mgute, said 14 of the 28 students were found by police officers smoking bhang in the school dormitories.

When they were confronted by the security officers, Mr Mgute said they went on rampage, destroying school property.

Briefing the press at his office on Monday, the administrator said disciplinary action will be taken against students who destroyed property once they complete their exams.

“It was unfortunate for the candidates to smoke bhang while the examination is on. They will be disciplined,” Mgute said.

The bhang smell was so pronounced that security officers were forced to inform the school deputy and upon checking in the dorms, they caught the 14 students red-handed.

After being found, the surprised students are said to have pelted stones at the security officers, forcing them to fire in the air to disperse them.

The students escaped into a maize plantation and returned on Monday to sit their exams.

“The school’s board assembled and decided to suspend the candidates but allowed them to sit the examination under surveillance,” Mr Mgute said.

Four more security officers have been deployed to the school to beef up security while a detective has been dispatched to investigate the source of the bhang the students were smoking.
