Makerere University emerges top in East Africa ahead of UoN in 2024 ranking

The University of Nairobi (UoN) has emerged among the top 10 most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the African continent.

EduRank, a top source for social media analytics in the education sector, has released the list of the top 100 universities in Africa.

Seven Kenyan universities have been named among the top 100 in Africa in the survey by EduRank.

The Kenyan varsities that made the cut include; the University of Nairobi ( ranked at position 8 in Africa), Kenyatta University (position 38), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) (position 53), Strathmore University (position 68), Moi University (position 73), Mount Kenya University (position 81) and Egerton University (position 83).

Makerere University was ranked ahead of UoN in the survey by EduRank, emerging top in the Eastern Africa region.

Continentally, the top 10 universities in Africa are; the University of Cape Town (position 1) University of the Witwatersrand (position 2), University of Stellenbosch (position 3), University of Pretoria (position 4), Cairo University (position 5), University of KwaZulu-Natal (position 6), Makerere University (position 7), University of Nairobi (position 8), University of Johannesburg (position 9) and University of South Africa (position 10).

EduRank stated on its website that the ranking was based on research outputs, non-academic prominence, and alumni influence.

"Top 100 universities in Africa ranked by EduRank based on research outputs, non-academic prominence, and alumni influence," EduRank said.

It added that it arrived at the ranking after analysing 24.5 million citations received by 2.16 million academic publications made by 1,104 universities from Africa.

EduRank conducts a series of statistical analyses to generate comparative university rankings in various fields, by country, region, and globally.

UoN

Over the years, the University of Nairobi has been ranked among the top universities in Africa and the world.

On whichever platform doing the ranking, UoN has consistently been ranked the best university in Kenya and among the top in the continent.

UoN was previously ranked ahead of its fierce competitor Makerere University in a survey by Webometrics which analyses all institutions of higher learning in the world.

Webometrics ranks universities based on impact, openness and excellence parameters in its ranking.

Makerere University and UoN frequently trade positions one and two in the Eastern Africa region in surveys conducted by different entities.

In Africa, the University of Cape Town is mostly ranked the best institution of higher learning in the continent.
