The government has called upon citizens to join hands in assisting those affected by the devastating floods that have swept through various regions of the country.

Issuing a statement on Sunday, May 5, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura noted the importance of unity and cooperation during this challenging period.

Mwaura also acknowledged the United Arab Emirates for sending donations while appealing to friends of Kenya and development partners to join in assisting the nation in these tough times.

"We urge all citizens to cooperate with local authorities and relief workers and to follow all the safety instructions provided by various government agencies. 18. For those in safer areas, we appeal to your spirit of community and generosity and ask that you join in the ongoing relief efforts, whether through donations or volunteering. We also appeal to our development partners and the friends of Kenya, to support our nation during this period of emergency. We commend the Government of the United Arab Emirates for their donations of two planes loaded with 80 tonnes of food items," Mwaura stated.

The ongoing heavy rainfall, particularly in the Lake Victoria basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, including the Nairobi area and South-Eastern lowlands, has resulted in widespread flooding and displacement of thousands of people.

Mwaura said these conditions are expected to persist, with the heavy rainfall extending to Northern Kenya.

The Spokesperson also provided an update on the grim situation, noting the regions most severely impacted by the floods.

"The continuing rainfall in various regions will exacerbate the flooding, impacting several counties," he remarked.

"Tragically, the ongoing flooding has resulted in the injury of 164 Kenyans while 72 persons are currently reported missing. Furthermore, approximately 212,630 persons, from 42,526 households have been displaced," Mwaura revealed.

He reported that the total number of affected individuals across the country stands at 223,198.

He also revealed efforts are underway to evacuate citizens residing near high-risk dams and water reservoirs, with logistical support and alternative accommodation being provided. The Nairobi Rivers Commission is actively engaged in river regeneration along the city's waterways to prevent future tragedies.

Despite successful control efforts, there have been reports of cholera cases, prompting the Ministry of Health to implement measures to contain the outbreak. Mwaura called for public cooperation in maintaining hygiene standards and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms arise.

The Spokesperson said Kenya's national parks and reserves remain largely accessible and safe for tourists, with the government reassuring the public that necessary precautions are being taken to ensure their well-being.

To report flood-related emergencies, citizens are advised to contact the National Disaster Operations Centre through the toll-free number provided.
