Detectives have intercepted 22 bales of bhang concealed in sacks of beans in Moyale Sub County.

According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the seizure was made possible thanks to vigilant members of the public who tipped off the law enforcement officers.

DCI said the operation unfolded when detectives responded to a report of a suspicious individual at the Liban bus booking office.

The suspect, purportedly in possession of four sacks of beans, had left the bags unattended at the entrance of the office.

"Detectives based at Moyale Sub County have today recovered narcotic drugs hidden in sacks of beans that were destined for an unknown location.

"Acting on information from members of the public, the detectives under the leadership of SCCIO Moyale responded to a report of a suspicious person with four sacks of beans at Liban bus booking office.

"Upon arrival, they discovered that the sacks had been left unattended at the entrance of the said booking office, and the owner was nowhere to be found, as he was claimed to have gone for authorization papers from KRA offices," the statement by DCI said.

Detectives, under the leadership of SCCIO Moyale, found the sacks abandoned, with the owner nowhere to be found.

To ascertain the contents, the officers employed the assistance of a trained police sniffer dog, which alerted them to the presence of something suspicious within the sacks.

The four sacks were promptly taken to the DCI Moyale offices for further examination.

Upon inspection, the contents were revealed to be not beans, as expected, but rather 22 bales of bhang. The detectives said the estimated street value of the seized narcotics is reported to be Ksh435,000.

DCI said efforts to apprehend the suspect, who remains at large, are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the recovered cannabis sativa is being securely held as evidence by authorities.

"To determine the contents of the sacks, the officers sought the assistance of a police sniffer dog, which identified the presence of something suspicious inside the sacks. The four sacks were escorted to DCI Moyale offices where they were opened, revealing twenty-two (22) bales of cannabis sativa with an estimated street value of Ksh435,000.

"Efforts to trace and arrest the suspect who is still at large are ongoing, and the recovered cannabis sativa is being kept under lawful custody as an exhibit."
