Kenya Railways has announced the resumption of commuter train services after a brief closure due to relentless heavy rains pounding most parts of the country.

In a statement on Monday, May 6, Kenya Railways said commuters can expect the resumption of services on the Embakasi Village to Lukenya route as well as the SGR Link train to Syokimau.

"We are pleased to inform the public that commuter train services will resume Tomorrow, Tuesday, 7th of May 2024, on the following routes: Embakasi Village, Lukenya, The SGR Link train and Syokimau," Kenya Railways announced.

However, it was noted that services for Limuru and Ruiru would remain suspended due to ongoing track repair works.

"Please note that commuter services for Limuru and Ruiru remain suspended due to ongoing track repair works on those lines. We also wish to advise the public that commuter train services are subject to change at short notice, depending on weather conditions and other safety considerations."

"We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to restore normalcy. The safety of our customers will always remain our top priority. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you back on board," Kenya Railways stated.

Kenya Railways suspends services

The organisation suspended all its services on April 24 citing safety concerns due to heavy rainfall affecting rail lines.

The closure aimed to prioritize customer safety.

This came shortly after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) disclosed the partial closure of several roads in Nairobi due to adverse weather conditions.

Among the affected roads were Aerodrome Road, Kapenguria Road, UN Avenue - Runda, and Kasarani Mwiki Road at Mwiki Bridge.

Motorists were cautioned about potential flooding along major routes such as Mombasa Road at Cabanas and Thika Road at Githurai/Kahawa bridge.

The heavy rains being experienced across the country have led to commuter nightmares as some roads have been cut off, and some partially closed for safety.

Some people have resorted to using boats to access other areas or to flee to safer grounds while some succumbed to the devastating floods.
