Uhuru, Raila attend high-octane Mashemeji derby at Kasarani Stadium

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga are attending 94th Mashemeji derby between Gor Mahi and AFC Leopards being staged at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

"Today's game, popularly known as Mashemeji derby, is the 94th such duel between the two giant football clubs and comes at a time when both teams are out of this year's FKF Premier League title race," State House said in a statement.

This is the third sporting event the President is attending in the past 24 hours.

Uhuru launches 2022 Kip Keino Classic

On Saturday, the President and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta joined thousands of athletics fans at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi County for this year's Kip Keino Classic.

The annual track and field event launched in 2020 is part of the Continental Tour Gold Series of the World Athletics, and is named after Kenyan Olympian Kipchoge Keino.

This year's event, also attended by senior government officials and political leaders led by Sports CS Amina Mohamed and Raila Odinga, attracted tens of top athletes from across the world including Kenyan sprints sensation Ferdinand Omanyala, Italian Marcell Jacobs, and Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

Other top guns at the Nairobi edition of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold Series event were Kenyan steeplechaser Conseslus Kipruto, Namibian sprinter Christine Mboma, Polish hammer thrower Wojciech Nowicki, and sprinter Isaac Makwala of Botswana.

Uhuru flags off Nairobi City Marathon

On Sunday morning, the President flagged off the inaugural Nairobi City Marathon, dubbed Uhuru Classic, at Nyayo National Stadium.

The road race on the new Nairobi Expressway attracted over 8,000 participants and featured full marathon (42km), half marathon (21km), 10km, and 5km segments.

With a Ksh6 million prize money bounty for full marathon winners, the Nairobi City Marathon is the largest road race in Africa.
