Two women from Gem Yala in Siaya county are being held at Yala police station for allegedly burning a 10-year-old boy.

The two identified as Mary Ambatsu and Mary Ouma burnt the minor in their village on Sunday afternoon after pouring paraffin on the boy's mouth before inserting a burning candle to 'exorcise evil spirits'

Confirming the incident, Gem Sub-county police commander Charles Chacha stated that they are seeking more time to finish the investigation.

"We are holding the two women alleged to have committed the heinous act and we are going to request court to give them more time to investigate the incident," the OCPD said

The minor was admitted on Monday with serious burn wounds in his mouth and various parts of his body and he is currently fighting for his life in ICU at the Siaya County Referral Hospital.

According to the minor's grandmother, Rose Obare she says she visited the two women seeking spiritual interventions and requested them to pray for the grandson who was allegedly not performing well in school and was behaving weirdly.

"My grandson has the issue of getting lost every now and then. Severally been spotted at the river trying to commit suicide or even in the middle of the road," the grandma told K24 Digital.
