The Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nairobi on Friday upheld the Teachers Service Commission’s January 2018 decision to deregister the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General, Wilson Sossion.
The court said the union leader was nominated to the National Assembly to champion ODM Party’s agenda, and not the teachers’.
The ruling was delivered by Justice Byram Ongaya.

TSC had written to Sossion and KUPPET Chairperson, Omboko Milemba, who was elected as Emuhaya MP in the August 8, 2017 general election, informing them that they were no longer teachers.
“The Commission has decided to terminate your services as a teacher with effect from January 15, 2018. It has been noted that you were nominated as a Member of Parliament yet the Commission has not received your resignation or retirement letter,” TSC boss, Nancy Macharia, said in a letter addressed to Sossion last year.
Sossion would, in August 2018, fault the Trade Unions Congress of Kenya for suspending him, saying the body’s organising secretary, Charles Mukhwaya, lacked powers to suspend him.
Sossion was in March, 2016 re-elected as KNUT Sec-Gen unopposed.
His term at the helm of KNUT, had it not been for his nomination to Parliament, should be ending in 2021.
It remains unclear whether Sossion will appeal against the court’s decision.
