Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko can breathe a sigh of relief, at least for now, after the Kiambu Court ordered him released on bail.

Sonko, who was charged with assault and forced entry into a private land over a 2019 incident, was on Tuesday, February 9, ordered freed on Sh300,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount.

Kiambu Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo freed Sonko on the basis that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has taken far too long to investigate the cases presented in court.

The former City Hall boss is not fully free since he has to appear at the Kahawa Law Courts over another case in which detectives want more time to hold him as they investigate Sonko's alleged involvement in terror planning and financing.

The former governor, a colourful personality, was taken to court in an ambulance from the Nairobi Hospital where he was rushed in the morning over several medical conditions, according to his lawyers.

After the bail ruling in Kiambu, Sonko's lawyers lodged an application seeking to stop Sonko from being taken to the Kahawa courts.

Instead, the lawyers want the former governor to be first taken to hospital for treatment and later to the Kahawa court.

The court is set to rule on the new application but has set the pre-trial date for the assault case on February 23.
