A 25-year-old man from Muthurwa in Nairobi was on Tuesday, February 9 arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts over his wife’s death.

Walter Lumumba Saya, a laptop bags trader at Gikomba Market, fatally assaulted his wife, Miriam Ongoche Okutoi, on Monday night (February 8).

Okutoi, 20, succumbed to her injuries while asleep, Saya said in his report to police.

The suspect said he and his spouse fought at 9pm Monday after he confronted Okutoi over claims that she was cheating on him with their neighbour.

Saya confessed to repeatedly hitting his partner with a power cable before neighbours broke up the fight. The couple would, thereafter, proceed to sleep.

At 4am Tuesday, Saya said he woke up and found his wife had died.

The suspect, thereafter, went to Muthurwa police post where reported the matter.

Mowlid Roble, an investigating officer handling the case, asked the court to grant detectives more time to record statements from witnesses.

Roble further said a postmortem examination on Okutoi’s body was yet to be conducted.

Magistrate Jane Kamau directed that Saya be detained for seven days to allow completion of investigations into the incident.

The matter will be mentioned on February 17, said Magistrate Kamau.

The deceased, who was a house-wife, leaves behind a daughter who is yet to turn one year old.
